Introductory Financial Accounting (IFA)

For Indigenous Learners

The CPA Introductory Financial Accounting class teaches you about the basics of accounting. You'll learn about analyzing financial information, the accounting cycle, and how to record different types of financial transactions. The course is taught using a mix of synchronous, asynchronous, in-person and remote learning. There are two in-person sessions, one at the start of the class to build a community and learn about the profession and one at the end to focus on preparing for the exam.

Community-based, Real-time Learning

Learning Community

The synchronous activities throughout the course will create learning circles that foster a sense of community within the cohort and provide peer learning and support opportunities.

Guest speakers/Indigenous session leader

Throughout the course, guest speakers and Indigenous session leaders will be brought in to provide Indigenous content and context, and to support a social learning environment. In addition, career advisors and academic coaches will also be supporting this course.

At the beginning of the course, you will participate in a two-and-a-half-day Hub session to engage in community building and be introduced to the profession. At the end of the course, the group will gather to focus on exam preparation.

*All students will attend the Hub sessions at the Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta.*

Every month, there will be a two-day session with a smaller group where you will work through technical materials and be exposed to Indigenous content and context through guest speakers and activities.

All students will attend the Satellite sessions at the Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta.

During the course, you will participate in webinars that cover various student-led topics. These webinars will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions and seek help in completing assignments. Additionally, the webinars will be recorded and made available to all students for reference.

The final exam of this course will be a synchronous exam that will cover all of the topics learned throughout the course. There are approximately 33 locations in western Canada where the exam can be taken. If you live in a remote location (150 km or more from an approved, pre-arranged exam location), arrangements can be made for you to take the exam closer to your location.

Individual Learning

Learning Flexibility

The asynchronous parts of the course allows you to learn and complete assessments at your own pace before the final exam.

Each unit covers several eBook chapters. Each chapter includes a snapshot, written instruction, examples, e-lessons on select technical topics, summary problems, and multiple-choice practice questions.

Each quiz consists of questions that have been selected to test your understanding of the technical topics in each unit.

Exercises and practice problems provide students with an opportunity to apply technical knowledge and strengthen their understanding of the course concepts.

Course Admission

To enroll in this course, you are required to:

Provide proof of Indigenous Status with one of the following:
- Copy of a Status card from the Government of Canada
- Copy of a Métis membership card from one of the five Métis Provincial Affiliates or recognized Territorial organizations. Additionally, the student may present a membership card from the Métis Settlements General Council showing membership in a Métis Settlement of Alberta
- Copy of a Nunavut Trust Certificate card
- Documentation that an ancestor’s name has been entered 1) in the Indian Register according to the Indian Act, or 2) on the band list of an individual band, or 3) as beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement or other claim regions such as Nunatsiavut, Nunavik, and Inuvialuit
- Written confirmation of Indigenous identity from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada or Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated
- Written confirmation of membership by a band council which has enacted its own band membership code
For Indigenous learners unable to provide one of the above, we encourage them to reach out to the CPAWSB to explore other options.

Note: The course requirements listed above apply only to this pilot offering of IFA. After completing this special offering of IFA, applicants who decide to take further prerequisite courses through the CPAWSB preparatory courses will need to meet all the entry requirements for CPA preparatory courses and must complete the CPAWSB enrollment process at that time.

Admission requirements for CPA PEP will also need to be fully met at the time of entering CPA PEP.
