CPAWSB recently presented Dr. Norman Sheehan, FCMA, FCPA, CGA, ICD.D, with the KBH Facilitator Award, which recognizes facilitators or session leaders who have had a notable and positive impact on their candidates and approach their role with dedication to excellence.
Dr. Norman Sheehan FCMA, FCPA, CGA, ICD.D, was initially drawn to the accounting profession because of the varied and challenging career paths it offered. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Commerce, majoring in Finance and Accounting from the University of Alberta, he earned his CMA designation and then took some time to backpack around the world, eventually following his heart to Norway where he completed his MBA and a PhD in Strategy at the Norwegian School of Management BI. Norman translated this passion for strategy and education into his current role as an accounting professor at the Edwards School of Business at the University of Saskatchewan where he teaches, publishes, and facilitates in the areas of strategy formulation, performance measurement, governance, and risk management.
Shortly after he returned to Canada, he began moderating in the CMA Strategic Leadership Program and editing Management Accounting Guidelines for the CMA profession. This expertise led to him being part of the team that designed and developed the Performance Management Module in addition to helping to revise the Core 2 module weekend materials in the CPA Professional Education Program in 2013-2015 and has been a workshop session leader for those modules since then. In addition to sharing his technical knowledge with candidates, he shares his teaching experience with session leaders by delivering orientation sessions for them.
Norman enjoys interacting with candidates, especially when he can eliminate fears they might have and highlight coping strategies, such as studying and case writing tips. He looks forward to the workshops, as he doesn’t see instructing as “work,” but rather as a way to give back to a profession by helping candidates master the technical and enabling competencies they need to succeed. Norman creates an environment for candidates where they can participate and ask questions to learn the CPA Way for case writing, and adjust to being in a professional program. “I encourage them to continue to learn how they learn best. This way, they’ll get the maximum results for the time spent in the program.”
In his spare time, Norman plays hockey and squash, listens to music, and enjoys travelling.
