Are you aspiring to become a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) in Canada? The first step towards this designation is the admission application. It's crucial to understand the process and requirements before you begin your journey. In this article, we will walk you through the key stages of the CPA PEP admission application process.

1. Preparing your Application

Before you dive into the admission application itself, there are certain prerequisites you must fulfill. These requirements are:
  • Recognized Degree: You need to hold a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Prerequisite Education: Completed the 14 essential prerequisite courses.
  • 120 Credit Hours: You must have a total of 120 credits
  • GPA Requirement: Maintain an overall GPA of 65% or higher for your core prerequisites.

2. Transcript Assessment

To prove that you meet these prerequisites, you must request a transcript assessment. The result of this assessment will determine your eligibility to submit an admission application to the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP).
Here are the possible outcomes of the assessment that would allow you to move forward with registration in CPA PEP:
  • PEP Eligible: This means you have met all prerequisite requirements mentioned above. You must submit official documents to support this.
  • PEP Conditional Core 1: You might have one or a combination of these prerequisites that still need to be fulfilled:
    • Prerequisite knowledge is in progress
    • Degree conferral is outstanding
    • Only unofficial transcripts have been provided
Please note: Transcript assessments typically take up to 10 business days to complete once all necessary documents are received. Plan accordingly to ensure your assessment aligns with the registration periods. Transcript assessments remain valid for one year* after completion and can be updated within that year if new documents are provided.
* Unless document validity is shorter.

3. Character and Reputation Assessment

During the admission application process, you will need to establish that you possess good character and reputation. This is a mandatory requirement under provincial legislation and is done through your responses to specific questions on the admission application. Any declarations made may require additional documentation, but they do not necessarily disqualify you as an applicant for CPA PEP.

4. Required Documents at Admission Application

When you're ready to submit your admission application, you'll need to provide a few essential documents:
  • Government-Issued ID: A copy of your government-issued ID is required to verify your legal name. This should be uploaded to your learner profile when requested.
  • Lawful Permission to Work and Study in Canada: Applicants must be lawfully permitted to work and study in Canada. If requested, you will need to provide documentation to demonstrate your eligibility.
Understanding and fulfilling these requirements is the first step in your journey toward becoming a CPA in Canada. It's important to note that while the process may seem extensive, meeting these criteria opens the door to a rewarding career in the field of professional accounting!

Remember, your CPA journey begins with the admission application, so ensure you're well-prepared to embark on this exciting path. Good luck!
