Indigenous Learners in Accounting (ILA) Initiative

The Indigenous Learners in Accounting (ILA) Initiative, a partnership between CPA Western School of Business, AFOA Alberta and CPA Canada, was created to address barriers Indigenous learners face when pursuing education and careers in accounting and finance.

Beginning in 2023, ILA offered customized Introductory Financial Accounting (IFA) and Core 1 courses developed with First Nations, Métis and Inuit subject matter experts. Indigenous perspectives, cultural context and lived experiences were incorporated into the learning materials and delivery, creating a more relevant and inclusive accounting education experience.

ILA has continued to evolve beyond the classroom. Through culturally relevant education, cohort-based learning, mentorship, tutoring, financial assistance and other supports, the Initiative works to create stronger pathways for Indigenous learners while recognizing the importance of community, connection and belonging.

A New Chapter: Accounting for Communities

In 2027, ILA is entering a new chapter through Accounting for Communities, a flexible program designed to bring practical accounting and financial knowledge and skills directly into Indigenous communities.

Building on what ILA has learned, Accounting for Communities aims to strengthen financial capacity not only for individuals, but also for Indigenous organizations, businesses, families and communities. By making education more accessible and reducing barriers to participation, the program supports communities in developing the knowledge and tools they need to make informed financial decisions and pursue new opportunities.

Together, ILA and Accounting for Communities are helping expand access to accounting and financial education while supporting Indigenous learners, communities and economic leadership.

Together, we are forging a new path in Indigenous education within the CPA community. With the combined efforts of all these remarkable organizations and individuals, we are excited to advance toward our goals to advance reconciliation and foster a more inclusive accounting profession.
