Reagan Bromley, CPA, is the recipient of this year’s Kouri Berezan Heinrichs (KBH) Award for Professional Growth, recognizing her dedication to candidate success and commitment to the profession.

Bromley first became interested in facilitation after completing her legacy program, where mentoring students was part of her employment role. Inspired by her own facilitators in Manitoba, she chose to give back through CPAWSB.  “I had some amazing facilitators who genuinely cared about our success,” Bromley recalls. “That inspired me to take on this role myself. Shout out to Susan D. and Dean A.”

Professional and Personal Growth Through Facilitation

Facilitation has contributed significantly to Bromley’s own development. “Facilitating forced me to get comfortable using the electronic handbook. I now have a stronger understanding of the sections and criteria than I did in public practice.”

One of her biggest turning points came when she began to master the feedback guides used in candidate assessments. “Once I moved past ‘just reading’ them to really understanding every MPI and ranking, I was able to give more specific feedback to help candidates.”

Candidate-Centered Teaching

Bromley adapts her facilitation style to support diverse learning needs. “I provide candidates with several approaches and encourage them to try different strategies to find what works best.”

Her consistent advice is the importance of planning and reflection: “Create a study plan and stick to it. Balance work, personal, and study time—and always debrief. Debriefing helps candidates learn from practice materials and become significantly stronger.”

Her personal teaching motto reflects this philosophy: “Debrief, debrief, debrief. Trust me, it will save you time later.”

Balancing Commitments

Like many professionals, Bromley has had to learn to balance. “I spent several years focusing only on facilitating. Time management is critical so that I can provide both my candidates and my employer with the best version of me.”

Flexibility, however, is one of the advantages of the facilitator role. “It helps me keep up with technical competencies while still planning my availability around my family’s busy times.”

Advice for Candidates and Future Facilitators

For aspiring CPAs, Bromley emphasizes building a strong foundation early: “Work hard and find a team that supports your growth along with theirs. Identify your limits and set boundaries to maintain balance.”
She also encourages colleagues to consider facilitating. “It can be challenging at first as you become comfortable with the materials and style, but after a few modules, it becomes second nature. Facilitating keeps technical skills sharp and provides meaningful flexibility.”

Building Reputation and Networks

Her own network has grown through articling connections and volunteering. “Some of my strongest professional relationships remain with people I articled with years ago. And volunteering with my kids’ activities also led to unexpected networking.”

Looking Ahead

Bromley believes the profession will continue to be in high demand. While technology and data skills are important, she stresses not losing sight of interpersonal skills. “Sometimes, picking up the phone solves an issue much faster than an email.”

Recognition

Receiving the KBH Award is an honour for Bromley. “It is meaningful to be recognized and appreciated for my work and commitment to candidate success.”
