Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator

We are seeking a highly organized and technically skilled Learning Management System (LMS) Administrator to join our Learning and Innovation team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the administration, enhancement, and continuous improvement of the digital systems that support thousands of learners, contractors, and employees.
The LMS Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day administration, configuration, and support of CPAWSB's learning management system environment, with a primary focus on the Instructure Canvas platform. Working closely with Education Technology, Program Development, IT, and operational teams, you will ensure that our digital learning environment is reliable, efficient, and aligned with organizational needs.
As the organization's subject matter expert for LMS administration, you will support system integrations, manage operational workflows, troubleshoot technical issues, document procedures, and contribute to future LMS enhancements and strategic initiatives.
Duties and Responsibilities
LMS Administration and Operations
- Administer and maintain the Canvas LMS environment, including sub-accounts, terms, course shells, blueprint courses, sections, roles, permissions, and feature settings.
- Maintain user provisioning and enrolment processes, including Student Information System (SIS) import files and API-based automation, and implement changes to these processes as the SIS integration progresses.
- Implement and support changes to provisioning and enrolment processes as LMS-SIS integration capabilities evolve.
- Serve as the internal subject-matter expert on LMS administration, configuration and operational best practices.
- Document and maintain the LMS operational workflows executed by the various School departments.
- Conduct periodic audits of LMS configurations, enrolments, permissions, course structure, and integrations to ensure data integrity, accuracy, and compliance with established standards.
System Integration and Technical Support
- Configure, test, and maintain LTI 1.3 integrations, including TurnItIn, Zoom LTI Pro, and Access Pearson; manage placement, key and deployment configuration, and troubleshoot issues with vendors.
- Serve as the LMS subject-matter expert resource on Student Information System (SIS) integration activities, including contributing technical input on data mapping, provisioning, and enrolment design, and executing LMS-side configuration and testing activities, under direction.
- Act as day-to-day contact for Instructure administrative support engagements; log and manage escalations, track resolution activities, and provide input regarding support tiers and service offerings.
- Serve as internal escalation point for LMS-related functional issues raised by program and operational teams; diagnose root causes, distinguish configuration issues from platform defects, and escalate issues to Instructure with appropriate technical detail.
- Support LMS-related reporting, data validation, and troubleshooting activities in collaboration with Information Services, Business Intelligence, and other internal teams.
Planning, Change Management and Continuous Improvement
- Contribute operational expertise to LMS planning and design decisions, including recommendations on configuration approaches, feature adoption, workflow improvements, and implementation considerations.
- Identify operational risks, constraints, dependencies, and improvement opportunities arising from day-to-day administration of the LMS environment and recommend appropriate actions.
- Monitor Instructure release notes, service outages, and scheduled maintenance; assess impacts to CPAWSB operations and coordinate communications to staff, contractors, and learners.
- Test new and beta Canvas features and LTI tools in the beta and test environments prior to production release; assess impacts to existing workflows, identify risks, and recommend implementation approaches and timing.
- Participate in planning, forecasting, evaluation, and continuous improvement activities related to digital learning systems and supporting technologies.
Documentation, Training and Governance
- Develop, test, and maintain the Education Technology Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) library in accordance with established standards, covering environment and account structure, user roles and permissions, course shell creation, enrolment and section management, curriculum and blueprint management, and integration configuration.
- Develop and maintain user guides, knowledge resources, training materials, and documentation for staff, contractors, and program teams.
- Provide functional training and guidance to LMS users on established processes, procedures, and best practices.
- Support compliance with accessibility, privacy, security, and records management requirements related to LMS administration and content delivery.
- Collaborate with Information Services, Business Intelligence, and program teams to align business processes and support a consistent learner experience.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience administering an enterprise leaning management system (LMS) in a post-secondary, professional education, corporate learning or comparable institutional environment.
- Experience administering the Instructure Canvas learning management system is preferred.
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in informational technology, education technology, information systems, business systems, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience configuring, supporting, and troubleshooting LTI 1.3 / LTI Advantage integrations with third-party applications such as TurnItIn, Zoom, and publisher platforms.
- Experience administering user provisioning and enrolment processes including SIS imports, API-based integrations, and automation tools.
- Experience using REST APIs and scripting languages such as Python to support system administration, automation, reporting, and operational processes.
- Experience supporting LMS - SIS integration initiatives, including data mapping, provisioning design, testing, validation, and implementation activities.
- Experience working with enterprise software vendors and support teams, including issue escalation, troubleshooting, and resolution management.
- Experience developing and maintaining procedural documentation, knowledge resources, user guides, and standard operating procedures.
- Experience providing system support, guidance, and training to end users in a technology-enabled learning environment.
- Experience supporting systems and processes that require adherence to accessibility, privacy, and security requirements.
- Canvas Certified Technical Admin (CCTA) certification, or willingness to obtain certification, is considered an asset.
This role is eligible for hybrid work. The CPAWSB is based primarily in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. If based outside of these centers, the successful candidate may be required to travel to a CPAWSB office from time to time, or as required.
The salary range for this role is $68,300 to $102,400, depending on qualifications, experience and internal equity.
